About The National Youth Alliance on Boys and Men of Color

The National Youth Alliance on Boys and Men of Color (NYABMOC) brings together five national networks of young people of color organizing for social, racial, and economic justice. Collectively these networks represent tens of thousands of organized young people of color. We envision a society where all young men of color are thriving and playing central roles in strong and healthy communities. We believe that if we are to achieve this vision, the leadership of young men of color must be supported at all levels of decision making and that strategies that promote collective action and empowerment to address systemic barriers to equity must be supported. Our primary goals are:

  • To bring together nationalnetworks and key organizations empowering young men of color to build relationships, share resources and practices, and develop shared strategy.
  • To ensure that the voices of young men of color themselves are included in new initiatives to improve outcomes for boys and men of color.
  • To create opportunities for young men of color leaders to meet directly with policy makers and funders to share their recommendations.
  • To increase resources for young men of color organizing to address systemic barriers to opportunity in their communities.

The NYABMOC is governed by an Organizing Council consisting of one staff member and one youth leader from each of our five anchor networks. Our core programs are:

  • Justice Reinvestment Campaign Fund: The NYABMOC oversees a campaign fund which distributes at least $500,000 each year in grants to youth organizing groups addressing root causes of inequity for boys and men of color around education, juvenile justice, and employment.
  • Youth Fellowship: The five youth leaders who sit on the NYABMOC Organizing Council receive coaching and leadership development support to strengthen the next generation of men of color social justice leaders.
  • Strategic Partnerships: The NYABMOC maintains relationships with key partners to ensure that young men of color have a say in decisions about their future. We have a strong partnership with the philanthropic affinity group the Executives’ Alliance on Boys and Men of Color where youth leaders participate in many of their meetings.

The NYABMOC is housed at the Funders’ Collaborative on Youth Organizing and co-convened by the Movements Strategy Center. Our five anchor networks are the Alliance for Educational Justice, the Criminal Justice Network for Youth, The Dignity in Schools Campaign, Opportunity Youth United, and Sons and Brothers.
