FCYO is Hiring a Program Director

Position Summary

The Funders’ Collaborative on Youth Organizing (FCYO) seeks a passionate and visionary leader with a commitment to building a more powerful, strategic, and aligned youth organizing field to fill the position of Program Director. Candidates should have robust knowledge of the field of youth organizing with excellent communication skills and a sophisticated analysis of the current political moment rooted in an understanding of racial, economic, and gender justice. This position will require strategic thinking and collaborative leadership in a fast-moving and innovative environment. The Program Director will help develop and lead a new multitiered grantmaking, capacity building, and peer learning program to support youth organizers in building the power necessary to win structural change. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment and ability to implement our organizational mission and vision, a demonstrated track record of designing political education and leadership development programs, and an understanding of philanthropy. FCYO is a fully remote organization and the positions can be based anywhere in the United States with a need to work some evenings and weekends. Some travel required when FCYO resumes travel (anticipated to be in Summer 2021).


The Program Director will oversee a new multitiered grantmaking, capacity building, and peer learning program. Specific responsibilities include: 

Strategic Cohort Development: The grantmaking program will offer three tiers of engagement that are each rooted in a process of structural analysis, deep assessment, and long-term strategy. These three tiers extend opportunities to a broader range of groups while also cultivating a stronger core. The Program Director will be responsible for the execution of a deliberate program for each tier that will consist of organizational assessments, political education, and long-term strategy development to support organizations in building the power to win. This will require working closely with the Co-Executive Directors, key staff, and consultants to ensure organizations have the resources and tools needed to grapple with organizational assessments and political growth and test innovative organizing strategies. Key to the program is creating a peer learning community for each tier that is grounded in a culture of vulnerability, rigor, and joy. 

Grantmaking: FCYO strives to create grantmaking processes that challenge the power imbalances of traditional philanthropy. The Program Director will be responsible for the creation and implementation of the grantmaking processes for this initiative. This includes developing requests for proposals (RFPs) and creating systems for reviewing grants and selecting organizations. This will also require working closely with the Operations Team to ensure grants are dispersed in a timely manner with all necessary documentation in place to execute a grant agreement. 

Relationship Building: A part of FCYO’s special sauce is the deep relationship built among and between those in philanthropy and those in the field of youth organizing. As such the Program Director will need to build trusting partnerships in both arenas to ensure our strategy is grounded in current conditions and a vision that strengthens multigenerational, social justice movements in the United States. 

Building a Strong Organization: The Program Director will also support other FCYO activities in service of our mission. A core component of this will be participating in the development of overall organizational strategy to support our goals.Additionally, the position will require creating systems for program evaluation, supervision and staff support, some fundraising and funder organizing, as well as some administrative responsibilities.    


  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in social justice work with significant experience with youth organizing and knowledge of the national youth organizing field.
  • Strong racial, gender, and economic justice analysis and understanding of movement building strategy. 
  • A sophisticated analysis of the current political moment with a clear understanding of the power needed to transform social and economic conditions. 
  • Experience designing and implementing capacity-building initiatives for youth organizing groups desired. 
  • Experience in philanthropy preferred.
  • Experience managing consultants, grantees, and strategic partners.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills required.
  • Strong verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting information at meetings and conferences and representing FCYO in the broader community. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse range of people. 
  • Fundraising experience desired including grantwriting and meeting with prospective funders.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects effectively. 
  • Outstanding creative thinking and problem-solving skills. 

Physical Demands

Candidate must have the ability to communicate via voice telephone and teleconference, read and understand written communication, and generate written communication manually and using a computer. Candidate must have the ability to travel by airplane. Candidate must also have the ability to sit at a desk for 2-3 hours at a time, lift and move documents and supplies not to exceed 25 lbs., and bend to file and retrieve documents.

Travel Requirements: 2-7 days of national travel per month. FCYO is anticipating resuming travel in summer 2021. 

Location: Remote

Job Type: Full-Time, salaried.

Start Date: April 5, 2021; earlier if available 


Salary is $85,000-100,000 commensurate with experience. A full benefits package is included.
